Vinca major 'Maculata'

A brilliant choice for brightening a difficult, shady corner, this variegated greater periwinkle pairs glossy, ovate leaves splashed with yellow-green centres with violet-blue flowers that keep appearing from mid-spring right through to autumn. Its low, arching, trailing habit makes it a superb evergreen groundcover for banks, borders, or container spillers, spreading readily to smother weeds and cover bare ground.

Grow in any but the driest soil, in full sun for the best flowering or partial to full shade for a shadier spot. It's fully hardy and tolerant of most conditions, reaching around 45cm in height with a vigorous spread of up to 2.5m, so it's best given room to run or trimmed back hard in early spring to keep it in check. As with other vincas, all parts of the plant are mildly toxic if ingested, so site with this in mind around children and pets. Generally pest-free.
