Tulipa clusiana 'Tinka' is a small species tulip that grows 20–25cm tall, with slender, pointed flowers. The outer tepals show a broad, strongly red triangle with narrow yellow borders, while the interior is clear yellow with contrasting dark purple stamens — a striking bicolour effect that opens wide in full sun. Flowering mid to late spring, its fine, upright habit makes it a natural choice for rockeries, gravel gardens and the front of borders, or for gentle drifts in pots and containers.
Plant bulbs 10–15cm deep in well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny, sheltered spot during autumn. This is a reliably perennial species tulip, naturalising well in favourable conditions and returning for a repeat display year after year. As with all tulips, the bulbs are harmful if eaten and can cause skin irritation, so gloves are recommended when handling and planting.
