Bred for scent as much as show, 'Secret Perfume' is one of the few tulips that actually smells as good as it looks. Its double, peony-shaped blooms open in soft, citrus-yellow layers of pleated petals, releasing a warm, sugary fragrance that carries well beyond the border — plant a group near a path, patio or open window and you'll catch it before you spot the flowers themselves.
Part of the Double Early Group, this variety flowers from mid to late April on sturdy stems reaching 40–50cm, making it equally at home in mixed borders, patio containers or as a long-lasting cut flower. Plant the bulbs 15cm deep and around 13cm apart in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot; like all tulips, the bulbs and sap can irritate skin, so gloves are worth wearing at planting time. Deadhead once flowering finishes and allow the foliage to die back naturally to build strength for next year's display.
