Taylors Bulbs Narcissus `Orangery` (5)

A real showstopper among daffodils, Narcissus 'Orangery' is a split-corona, or "butterfly," variety with a strikingly different look from the classic trumpet daffodil. Broad, pure white outer petals form a crisp backdrop for the true spectacle at the centre — a corona split into vivid, frilled orange-yellow segments that lie flat and open, giving the flower a layered, almost orchid-like appearance.

Reaching around 45cm, Orangery flowers in early to mid-spring on sturdy stems well able to withstand wind and rain. It naturalises well and forms neat clumps of grey-green foliage, making it equally at home in borders, containers, or planted in gentle drifts. Its fragrant, unusual blooms also make an excellent cut flower, and pair beautifully with softer companions such as muscari or early tulips.

Plant bulbs in autumn, at roughly three times the height of the bulb, in moderately fertile, well-drained soil that stays reliably moist through the growing season, in full sun or partial shade. As with all narcissi, bulbs and sap can be harmful if eaten and may irritate skin, so gloves are recommended when handling.
