Taylors Bulbs Allium Kings and Queens (18)

A striking pairing of two classic alliums, 'Kings and Queens' combines the soft, starry white globes of Allium nigrum with the bold violet-purple spheres of Allium 'Purple Sensation' for a display that's as architectural as it is eye-catching. Planted together in drifts, the contrast between the two brings real depth to a border once the spring bulbs have faded.

Flowering in May and June on tall, sturdy stems reaching 70–90cm, this mix is perfect towards the back of a border, dotted through perennial planting, or massed together for maximum impact — the seed heads that follow flowering are just as striking and can be left in place for autumn interest. Plant the bulbs in autumn, around 10–15cm deep and 15–20cm apart, in well-drained soil in full sun; alliums are generally trouble-free and left undisturbed will bulk up and flower reliably for years.
