Streptocarpus Hybrid — Pink Flowered (Cape Primrose)

For an easy-care flowering houseplant that keeps on giving, it's hard to beat Streptocarpus, commonly known as Cape Primrose. This pink-flowered hybrid produces loose clusters of pretty, open-faced blooms above a neat rosette of soft, hairy, strap-shaped leaves, with flowering that can continue intermittently from spring right through to autumn — a real rarity among houseplants for sheer duration of colour.

Position it in bright, indirect light or partial shade, avoiding direct summer sun, which can scorch the foliage. Water carefully, allowing the compost to dry out a little between waterings, and take care to keep water off the leaves themselves, as they're prone to marking. Feed sparingly — a weak liquid feed once or twice a month is plenty. Tough and largely trouble-free once settled, it's a lovely, compact choice for a windowsill, desk, or conservatory, generally staying within 20–30cm in height and spread.
