Sorbus vilmorinii

Vilmorin's rowan is one of the most delicate and graceful of all rowans, and a perfect choice where there's only room for one tree. It forms a small, elegant, spreading tree with fine, fern-like leaves made up of many tiny leaflets, which flutter in the lightest breeze. In late spring it bears flat, frothy heads of creamy-white flowers that are popular with bees. They are followed by hanging clusters of small crimson berries that fade through rose pink to almost white as autumn turns to winter. Pale berries are among the last that birds take, so the display often lasts well into the colder months. In autumn the foliage turns rich shades of red and purple. It comes from western China and makes a lovely feature in a small garden, a woodland-style planting or a lawn.

This is a compact tree that reaches around 5m tall and a similar width, often with several stems. It suits even modest gardens. Plant in full sun or light shade in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It prefers slightly acid to neutral conditions and is best avoided on shallow chalk. It is fully hardy and tolerant of exposed sites. The berries are ornamental and should not be eaten, so wear gloves when handling it and bear this in mind in gardens used by children and pets. Water well through its first couple of summers while it establishes, and keep the base clear of competing grass and weeds. Minimal pruning is needed; just remove any crossing or damaged branches while dormant in late winter.
