Sorbus sargentiana

Sargent's rowan is one of the most distinctive and rewarding of all rowans, with something to offer in every season. In winter its stout shoots are tipped with large, glossy crimson buds that are sticky to the touch, much like those of a horse chestnut. In spring these burst open to reveal the largest leaves of any rowan: bold, plume-like fronds up to 30cm long on red stalks. In late spring and early summer it bears huge, flat heads of creamy-white flowers, much visited by bees. These are followed by great trusses of small, bright orange-red berries. In autumn the foliage turns glorious shades of amber, orange and red, rivalling the finest maples. It is native to Sichuan in western China and was introduced to Britain by the plant hunter Ernest Wilson in 1908. It is named after the American botanist Charles Sprague Sargent.

This is a broad, spreading tree with a rounded crown. It is slow-growing when young but well worth the wait, eventually reaching around 8–12m tall and as wide or wider over 20–50 years. It makes a magnificent specimen for a lawn or larger garden, where its striking winter buds and autumn colour can be fully appreciated. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, humus-rich soil that is moist but well-drained and acid to neutral. It is fully hardy and tolerant of atmospheric pollution. The berries are ornamental and should not be eaten, so wear gloves when handling it and bear this in mind in gardens used by children and pets. Water well through its first couple of summers while it establishes. Minimal pruning is needed; just remove any crossing or damaged branches while dormant in late winter.
