Sorbus pseudovilmorinii

Sorbus pseudovilmorinii is a charming small rowan for gardens where space is at a premium. Its name means "false vilmorinii", and it closely resembles Vilmorin's rowan but is less vigorous, which makes it an excellent choice for the smallest plots. It forms a graceful tree with an arching habit and fine, fern-like leaves made up of many small leaflets. In late spring it bears clusters of white flowers, much visited by bees. These are followed by hanging bunches of deep pink to red berries that gradually pale with a white blush as autumn goes on. In autumn the foliage turns vivid shades of orange and red. It comes from the mountains of western China, particularly Yunnan, as well as Tibet and northern Vietnam, where it grows in mountain scrub and forest.

This is a compact, slow-growing tree that makes a lovely specimen for a small garden, a courtyard or a front garden, or a feature in a mixed border. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It is best avoided on heavy clay or chalky ground, where it may be short-lived. It is fully hardy. The berries are ornamental and should not be eaten, so wear gloves when handling it and bear this in mind in gardens used by children and pets. Water well through its first couple of summers while it establishes. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any crossing or damaged branches in winter.
