Sorbus 'Eastern Promise' – Mountain Ash – 12ltr Pot

'Eastern Promise' holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is one of the most rewarding rowans for a smaller garden. Clusters of white flowers open in spring. In autumn they are followed by heavy, dense bunches of deep rose-pink berries, so plentiful they weigh the branches down. At the same time, the dark green, finely divided leaves turn deep purple and then fiery orange-red, making a vivid display alongside the pink fruit.

The RHS lists it as a plant for pollinators, as the spring blossom provides nectar and pollen for bees and other insects. The berries give birds a generous autumn feast. The fruit is ornamental and shouldn't be eaten by people or pets, so wear gloves when handling berried branches.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. It grows in clay, loam or sand and does best in acid to neutral conditions. It is fully hardy and tolerant of urban pollution, and its neat, oval crown makes it an ideal specimen for small gardens, courtyards and front lawns. Expect around 6m in height with a spread of 4m, within an ultimate range of 4–8m tall. Work well-rotted compost into the planting hole, stake firmly, and water well through the first summer. Pruning is minimal: just remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter.
