Sorbus 'Autumn Spire' – Columnar Rowan – 12ltr Pot

'Autumn Spire' is a slender rowan bred for gardens where space is tight. Its narrow, upright to columnar habit gives height and structure without casting wide shade or crowding nearby planting. White flower clusters open in summer. In autumn the bright green, finely divided leaves turn rich shades of purple, red and yellow, and masses of yellow berries with red centres contrast well against that colour.

It's a good tree for wildlife too, with blossom for bees and pollinators and berries for birds later in the year. The fruit is ornamental and shouldn't be eaten by people or pets, so wear gloves when handling berried branches.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil. It grows well in loam, clay or sand. 'Autumn Spire' is hardy, copes with both exposed and sheltered positions, and tolerates urban pollution, so it suits courtyards, front gardens, boundaries and avenues. It reaches its mature size in around five to ten years, typically 4–8m tall with a spread of just 1–1.5m. Work well-rotted compost into the planting hole, stake firmly, and water well through the first summer. Pruning is rarely needed beyond removing damaged or crossing branches in winter.
