Sorbus aria 'Lutescens' – Whitebeam (12L Pot)

'Lutescens' is one of the loveliest whitebeams and one of the most beautiful trees in spring. The new leaves emerge like upright candles covered in a soft, creamy white down, so the whole tree seems to shimmer silver in the sunlight. Through summer the foliage matures to an elegant grey-green with silvery undersides that flash in the breeze. Clusters of creamy white flowers appear in April and May, followed by bright orange-red berries that the birds love, and in autumn the leaves turn warm shades of russet and gold. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and its neat, upright habit when young makes it an excellent choice for gardens, driveways and streets.

It grows to around 5m x 4m after 10 years, spreading gently with maturity. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It is very hardy and tolerant, thriving on chalk and clay and coping well with urban pollution and coastal conditions. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any crossing or damaged branches in winter.
