Sisyrinchium californicum 1L

A semi-evergreen, iris-like perennial forming clumps of sword-shaped, grey-green leaves, with broadly winged stems reaching up to 60cm. Throughout summer it produces a steady succession of bright yellow, star-shaped flowers, each finely veined with brown.

A member of the iris family, golden-eyed grass is ideal for a bog garden or pond margin, growing well in boggy soil or in an aquatic basket on a pond shelf, in shallow water up to around 5cm deep. It thrives in full sun and neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Though relatively short-lived, it self-seeds freely, so new plants readily take its place.
