Wilja is a dependable second early that has long been a favourite with home growers for its generous crops and rich, earthy flavour. Bred in the Netherlands in 1967, it was developed to bulk up early in the season, producing large, uniform, long-oval tubers with light yellow skins and pale yellow flesh. Its texture sits nicely between waxy and floury, so it’s a true kitchen all-rounder: superb for creamy mash and early-season roast potatoes, and equally good boiled, baked or made into chips.
High-yielding and easy to grow, Wilja is a reliable choice for allotments, kitchen gardens and large containers, with attractive purple flowers in summer. Chit your seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free spot for four to six weeks, then plant out in April, around 10cm deep and 38cm apart, allowing a little more room than for first earlies. Earth up as the shoots develop so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Keep well watered during dry spells, and your crop should be ready to lift from July, around 13 to 15 weeks after planting.
