Sagitta is a high-yielding early maincrop from leading Dutch potato breeder HZPC, valued for its quick start, generous crops and attractive appearance. It produces large, oval tubers with very bright, smooth yellow skins and light yellow flesh. Its slightly floury texture and very good flavour make it a true multi-purpose variety in the kitchen, excellent for chips and roasting, and equally good boiled, mashed or baked.
Sagitta sets its tubers early, giving a good crop sooner than many maincrops, and shows good resistance to dry rot, spraing, silver scurf and splitting. It prefers warm soil, so avoid planting too early in cold conditions. Chit your seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free spot, then plant out in April once the soil has warmed, around 10–13cm deep and 40cm apart. Planting slightly deeper and earthing up well as the shoots develop helps keep the tubers covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Water well during dry spells and keep an eye out for blight in warm, humid weather. Your crop should be ready to lift from late summer. Sagitta is best enjoyed within a few weeks of harvest rather than stored long term.
