Elfe is a modern early variety with golden good looks and a flavour to match. Bred in Germany and introduced in 2003, it produces high yields of attractive, uniform, oval tubers with smooth yellow skins, shallow eyes and bright yellow flesh. Its mainly firm, creamy texture and rich, buttery taste make it a versatile choice in the kitchen, holding together well when boiled and also excellent baked or mashed. It shows very little discolouration after cooking, so the potatoes look as good on the plate as they taste.

Quick to establish and reliable to grow, Elfe performs best in good, fertile, well-drained soil with a steady supply of moisture and nutrients. It’s best kept away from ground prone to scab, so add plenty of well-rotted organic matter before planting. Chit your seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free spot for around four weeks, then plant out from March to April, around 10cm deep and 30cm apart. Earth up as the shoots develop so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Water well once tubers start to form, but avoid waterlogging. Your first potatoes should be ready to lift from early summer, and handle them gently at harvest to protect the skins. Supplied in a 2kg pack, ideal for a good-sized row or several potato bags.

Each pack is checked before dispatch. Available from Pengelly Garden Centre.
