A robust, long-lived ornamental sage that brings vivid colour to the front of the border. Compact, bushy clumps of narrow, aromatic mid-green foliage send up dense, upright spikes of deep violet-blue, hooded flowers with contrasting pink-purple bracts, flowering profusely from summer into autumn. A magnet for bees and other pollinators, it also makes a lovely cut flower. Reaching around 45-50cm in both height and spread, it's a reliable, low-maintenance choice for cottage gardens, gravel gardens or planted in drifts with ornamental grasses. Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Grow in light, moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, though it tolerates light partial shade. Deadheading and keeping the soil moist will prolong flowering, but established plants are drought-tolerant once settled in. Divide congested clumps in spring, around every three to five years, to keep them flowering well.
Each plant is hand-selected for healthy, vigorous growth before it leaves us.
