A compact, bushy evergreen shrub with small, aromatic, oval leaves and loose spikes of rich violet, tubular flowers produced in real abundance from late summer right through to the first frosts. It's a long-flowering, low-maintenance choice for the front of a border, gravel garden or container, and its nectar-rich blooms are a strong draw for bees and other pollinating insects.
Reaching around 30–100cm in height and spread, depending on how hard winter frosts cut it back, this autumn sage does best in full sun, in light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil — it's tolerant of chalk, loam and sand. Good drainage matters more than shelter from cold for this drought-tolerant, Texas- and Mexico-native sage, though a sheltered spot helps it come through a British winter reliably. Deadhead spent flower spikes regularly to keep new blooms coming, and cut back hard in spring, once the risk of frost has passed, to remove winter-damaged growth and encourage bushy new growth from the base.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch to ensure it reaches you in the best possible condition.
