A compact, bushy evergreen shrub with small, aromatic, oval leaves and a long flowering season that runs from summer right through to the first frosts. Spikes of vivid pink, tubular flowers are produced in abundance over this extended period, making it a reliably colourful choice for the front of a border, gravel garden, or container, and its nectar-rich blooms are popular with bees and other pollinators.
Reaching around 30–100cm in height and spread, depending on how hard it's cut back by winter frosts, Salvia greggii does best in full sun, in light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil — it's tolerant of chalk, loam and sand. A sheltered position helps it come through a British winter successfully, as good drainage matters more than shelter from cold for this drought-tolerant, Texas-native sage. Deadhead spent flower spikes regularly to keep new blooms coming, and cut back in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed to remove any winter-damaged growth and encourage bushy new growth from the base.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch to ensure it reaches you in the best possible condition.
