Rudbeckia ‘Little Goldstar’ is a compact black-eyed Susan that packs in an exceptional number of flowers for its size. From midsummer well into autumn, it’s smothered in golden-yellow daisies with dark brown central cones, held on sturdy, branching stems above neat clumps of deep green leaves. Bees and butterflies love it, and it’s recognised as an RHS Plant for Pollinators. The flowers are also good for cutting.
Growing to around 50cm tall and wide, ‘Little Goldstar’ is ideal for patio pots, the front of a border and late-summer planting schemes. It pairs especially well with ornamental grasses, asters and sedums. Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. It copes with clay, loam and sandy soils, and tolerates dry spells once established. It’s fully hardy and happy in exposed spots. As a herbaceous perennial, it dies back to ground level in autumn and returns with fresh growth each spring. Cut back the old stems in late winter or early spring, or leave the seedheads standing over winter for birds and frosty structure. Divide congested clumps every few years in spring or autumn to keep them flowering freely.
