A compact evergreen shrub that earns its keep twice over, Rhododendron 'Ramapo' opens a haze of small, funnel-shaped lavender-blue flowers in mid to late spring, held above neat, small blue-green leaves. Once the flowers fade, the foliage itself becomes the star, taking on rich plum-purple tones through the colder months for striking winter interest.
Bred from Rhododendron carolinianum and R. minus, this dense, low-growing hybrid reaches around 60-90cm in height and spread, making it an excellent choice for smaller borders, rockeries, or the front of a mixed shrub bed where larger rhododendrons wouldn't fit. It grows well in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, acidic (ericaceous) soil; it's not suited to heavy clay, so improve drainage with organic matter if needed, and avoid planting too deep. Fully hardy and untroubled by cold, it needs no winter protection once established. Light pruning, if wanted, is best done straight after flowering.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
