Quercus rubra – Red Oak (12L Pot)

The red oak is a magnificent, fast-growing tree from North America, grown in Britain since 1724 and loved for its spectacular autumn colour. Its large, pointed, lobed leaves are deep green through summer before turning glorious shades of orange and crimson-brown. The smooth, silver-grey bark adds interest in winter, and its acorns feed birds and other wildlife. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and makes an impressive specimen for larger gardens, parkland and estate planting.

It grows quickly to around 7m x 5m after 10 years, eventually forming a large tree with an open, spreading crown, so give it plenty of space. Plant in full sun in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. It adapts to most soils, including heavy clay, although autumn colour is richest on neutral to acid ground. It is tolerant of urban pollution and needs little pruning beyond shaping in winter while young.
