Quercus robur – English Oak (12L Pot)

The English oak is one of Britain's two native oaks and a true symbol of the countryside, valued for its strength, long life and character. Its familiar dark green, lobed leaves turn warm shades of orange and russet-brown in autumn, and mature trees produce acorns in abundance. It supports more wildlife than any other native tree, from insects and birds to jays, squirrels and deer. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a wonderful tree to plant for future generations, making a lovely commemorative or celebration gift.

It grows to around 7m x 5m after 10 years and eventually becomes a large, broad, dome-headed tree, so choose a spot with plenty of space. Plant in full sun in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. It adapts to most soils, including heavy clay. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any crossing or damaged branches in winter while young.
