Quercus ilex – Holm Oak (12L Pot)

The holm oak, or evergreen oak, is a handsome Mediterranean tree that has been grown in England since the 1500s. Its dark green, glossy leaves have silvery-grey undersides that flash in the breeze, and they stay on the tree all year round. Yellow catkins hang from the branches in early summer, followed by small acorns that feed the wildlife. Given space, it slowly forms a magnificent, dome-shaped tree. It is also excellent for screening and shelter, and can be clipped into formal shapes or a dense evergreen hedge.

It grows to around 7m x 5m after 10 years. Plant in full sun or light shade in any well-drained soil. It copes well with chalk and dry conditions, and is outstanding in coastal gardens, where it stands up to wind and salt spray. It needs no routine pruning, although it takes clipping well if you want to keep it to a set size.
