Prunus cer Nigra — 12L Container

Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra', the black cherry plum, is prized for its very dark purple foliage, which makes a striking contrast in the garden. Small pale pink flowers cover the bare branches in late February and March, one of the first signs of spring. It forms a neat, rounded tree and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

It grows to around 4m x 3m after 10 years. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; it tolerates most soils, including chalk and clay. Little pruning is needed, but any that is required should be done in summer, when the risk of silver leaf is lowest.
