Pieris japonica 'Sarabande'

An RHS Award of Garden Merit shrub, 'Sarabande' is a compact, rounded pieris valued for its neat evergreen structure and reliable spring display. Small, dark green leaves emerge tinged bronze-red before maturing, and in late spring the shrub is covered in upright panicles of white, urn-shaped flowers that provide welcome nectar for early pollinators.

Grow in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained, acidic soil enriched with humus — ericaceous compost is a must in containers or where garden soil isn't naturally acid. Choose a sheltered spot away from cold winds and harsh morning sun to protect both flowers and young foliage. Most retailers describe it reaching around 1–1.5m in height and spread over its first decade, though the RHS lists an eventual ultimate size of up to 2.5m given time, so it's worth allowing it room to develop.
