A tropical, woody-based perennial with glossy, hairy, lance-shaped green leaves marked by deeply impressed veins, native to Africa. From spring through to autumn it produces dome-shaped clusters of star-shaped, pink flowers with long tubes, held above the foliage in a dense, eye-catching display. The blooms are a real magnet for butterflies, bees and other pollinators, and make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers too.
In its native range Pentas can reach up to 2m, but in the UK it's best treated as a container or summer bedding plant, as it isn't frost-hardy and won't survive an outdoor British winter. Grow it in full sun, in fertile, well-drained, loamy soil or peat-free compost, and water regularly to keep it flowering freely — it doesn't like to dry out completely during the growing season. Feed every couple of weeks through summer with a balanced fertiliser to support continuous blooming, and bring it under cover into a bright, frost-free spot before the first autumn frosts if you'd like to keep it going as a houseplant over winter, rather than growing it as a single-season annual.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch to ensure it reaches you in the best possible condition.
