Pennisetum rueppellii, also known as Pennisetum setaceum or African Fountain Grass, is a showy, mound-forming ornamental grass valued for its gracefully arching, narrow foliage. From mid-summer into early autumn, the foliage is topped with slender, feathery flower plumes in soft pink tones, gradually drying to a warm tan as they mature, creating a wonderfully soft, fountain-like effect that moves beautifully in the breeze.

Fast-growing and densely tufted, this variety typically reaches a height of 90–150cm with a spread of 60–120cm, making a bold, dramatic statement as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or in large containers on a sunny patio. Its feathery plumes are also lovely in fresh or dried arrangements.

Pennisetum rueppellii thrives in full sun, in light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil, and is tolerant of heat, humidity, wind, and drought once established. In milder, sheltered spots it can remain evergreen and ever-flowering, though in most UK gardens it's best treated as tender and given winter protection, or grown as an annual/patio specimen. Cut back dead growth in early spring to make way for fresh new foliage.
