Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head'
An award-winning fountain grass with real presence, Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head' produces some of the largest and most dramatic flower plumes in the family. Smoky, dark red bottlebrush flowers rise above narrow green foliage from mid to late summer, arching gracefully outward like a fountain in full spray, before fading to brown in autumn and often persisting attractively through winter.
This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner forms a substantial, clump-forming mound of green leaves that turns golden in autumn before fading to buff, providing multiple seasons of interest from the same plant. The dried seedheads are a valuable food source for birds and make striking additions to cut and dried flower arrangements.
Reaching 0.5–1m in height and spread, 'Red Head' is a superb choice for the middle or back of a mixed border, prairie-style planting, or as a bold specimen where its impressive flower plumes can be fully appreciated.
Grow in full sun in any light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It may benefit from some winter protection in colder areas. Cut back to the base in spring as new growth begins to emerge.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
