Pear (Pyrus) Concorde 12L

Concorde is a modern English pear that combines the best of two classic varieties, Conference and Doyenné du Comice. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is one of the most reliable and rewarding pears you can grow. White spring blossom, loved by bees, is followed in October by heavy crops of large, pale green-yellow pears lightly touched with russet. The flesh is sweet, juicy and melting, with a rich, well-balanced flavour inherited from Comice. The fruit also stores well, often keeping into the new year if kept somewhere cool.

Concorde forms a naturally compact tree that crops from an early age, making it ideal for smaller gardens. It is partly self-fertile, so it can produce some fruit on its own, but it crops more heavily with another pear nearby. Beth, Conference and Beurré Hardy all make good partners, and Concorde is an excellent pollinator for other pears too. Plant in full sun in a sheltered spot, in deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and avoid frost pockets, as pears flower early. Concorde can set very heavy crops, so thin the young fruits after the natural early summer drop for better size. Pick the pears while still firm and ripen them indoors for the best flavour. Prune in winter to keep an open shape and encourage fruiting spurs. Fully hardy.
