This upright switch grass forms a dense, narrowly columnar clump of fine, mid-green leaves that flush red-purple through late summer and deepen further into rich autumn shades of red and burgundy. From late summer into autumn, airy, weeping panicles of tiny pink-flushed flowers hover above the foliage, ageing to a warm straw colour that carries the display right through winter.
Reaching around 1–1.2m in height with a spread of 75–90cm, it holds its upright form well without staking. Grow in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil — it tolerates a wide range of soil types and is drought-tolerant once established. Cut all stems back to ground level in late winter, just before new growth begins in spring. Left uncut, the seed heads also provide valuable winter food for birds.
Each plant is hand-selected to ensure it reaches you in excellent condition, ready to add structure, movement, and season-long colour to your borders.
