Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream'

A compact, bushy form of heavenly bamboo, Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' offers year-round colour from its finely divided, bamboo-like foliage. New growth emerges a striking bronze-orange in spring, maturing to green through summer while often retaining a warm red-orange flush, before turning rich shades of red and gold as autumn and winter set in. Conical panicles of small white flowers appear in summer, sometimes followed by red berries.

As with all Nandina, this plant is harmful if eaten, so care should be taken around pets and poultry, and gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.

A slow-growing, long-lived shrub, 'Gulf Stream' reaches 1–1.5m in height with a spread of 0.5–1m, forming a dense, rounded shape that fills out right to the ground with minimal need for underplanting. Its compact, upright habit makes it a versatile choice for foundation planting, low hedging, mixed borders, or as a striking specimen in a container.

Easy to grow and low maintenance, it thrives in full sun to partial shade in any moist but well-drained soil, and is highly tolerant of urban pollution. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any dead or damaged growth to keep its neat habit.
