Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus'
Known as porcupine grass for its distinctive spiky, upright habit, Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' is a bold and architectural addition to any planting scheme. Its stiffly erect green leaves are cross-banded with striking horizontal bands of yellow, creating a lively, patterned effect that stands out even from a distance. In mid-autumn, crinkly silver flowering plumes rise well above the foliage, adding further height and movement.
This is a compact, clump-forming grass despite its stature, reaching an impressive 1.5–2.5m in height while staying narrow with a spread of just 0.1–0.5m — making it an excellent choice for adding vertical accents to borders without taking up too much ground space. Its upright habit means it holds itself well and is far less prone to flopping than similar variegated cultivars.
Fully hardy and easy to grow, 'Strictus' thrives in full sun in any moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and benefits from protection against excessive winter wet. Cut back to the base in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner provides striking structure and colour right through to winter.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
