Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief'
A striking ornamental grass for the late-season border, 'Red Chief' earns its keep twelve months of the year. Narrow, arching mid-green leaves form a neat, upright clump through summer before turning yellow in autumn and fading to pale brown for winter interest. The real draw comes in late summer, when feathery flower panicles open a deep, maroon-red above the foliage, ageing gracefully to silver and persisting right through winter — a lovely contrast against frost or low winter light.
Grow in full sun in any moist but well-drained soil; it's fully hardy, tolerates exposure, and copes well with a wide range of soil types once established. Reaching around 1.2–1.5m in height with a similar or slightly narrower spread, it works well as a specimen, in prairie-style planting, or grouped for a naturalistic border. Leave the faded plumes and foliage in place over winter for structure and wildlife interest, then cut back hard to the base in late winter before new growth emerges. Generally trouble-free, with no significant pest or disease concerns.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
