Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light'

An RHS Award of Garden Merit grass prized for its elegance, 'Morning Light' forms a compact, upright clump of very narrow leaves finely edged in white, giving the whole plant a luminous, silvery quality that's especially striking when backlit by low sun. Pink-tinged flower panicles appear in autumn — though only reliably after a good hot summer — fading to cream as the foliage turns pale brown for winter.

Grow in full sun in any moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, protecting from excessive winter wet. It's more compact and refined than many miscanthus, reaching around 1–1.5m in height with a spread of 0.5–1m, and its restrained habit makes it well suited to smaller gardens, courtyards, and even large containers where taller miscanthus wouldn't fit. Leave the foliage standing over winter for structure and wildlife shelter, then cut back hard in early spring before new growth appears. Generally free from pests and disease, and can be slow to establish in its first year or two.
