Miscanthus sinensis 'Malepartus' (Chinese Silver Grass)

A statuesque, RHS Award of Garden Merit ornamental grass that extends the season of interest right through autumn. Fine, arching leaves carry a distinctive white central stripe, turning attractive shades of orange and red as the season progresses. From late summer, spectacular reddish-brown, silky flower plumes rise above the foliage, appearing to glow in evening light before quickly ageing to silver — an outstanding, free-flowering display.

A vigorous grass reaching around 1.5 to 2.5 metres in height with a spread of 1 to 1.5 metres, quick to establish and well suited as a feature plant in mixed or perennial borders, or a gravel garden. Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun, incorporating organic matter at planting to improve structure. Water regularly through the first summer while establishing; thereafter it copes well with drier conditions. Cut back to the ground in late winter or early spring, and lift and divide clumps every five years or so to maintain vigour.
