Miscanthus sinensis 'Ferner Osten' (Eulalia 'Far East')
An RHS Award of Garden Merit grass with genuine year-round drama, popularised in naturalistic and prairie-style planting schemes. Narrow, arching leaves form a graceful clump-forming mound, while in late summer feathery flower panicles emerge a striking deep red, gradually ageing through pink to silver as autumn progresses — both foliage and flower plumes persist attractively through winter, with the leaves turning a dull copper-orange.
A clump-forming deciduous grass reaching around 1 to 1.5 metres in height with a slightly narrower spread of 0.5 to 1 metre, well suited to sunny mixed borders and informal or naturalistic planting. Grow in full sun in any moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil, protecting from excessive winter wet. Leave the flower plumes standing through winter for birds and garden interest, then cut back hard in late winter or early spring — Feb/March is ideal — to make way for fresh new growth by early summer.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
