Mirabelle (Prunus) Gypsy 12L

Gypsy is a handsome mirabelle-type cherry plum and a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. In early spring its branches are covered in white blossom, one of the first feasts of the year for bees. In late summer it produces generous crops of large, glossy, carmine-red fruits with juicy orange flesh and a sweet, rich flavour. It is a true dual-purpose variety, delicious eaten fresh from the tree and just as good in jams, tarts, compotes and preserves.

Gypsy forms an upright, rounded tree with dark green leaves. It is tough and easy-going, growing on almost any well-drained soil, including clay and chalk, and coping with more exposed sites than many plums. It is partially self-fertile, so it will produce some fruit on its own, but it crops far more heavily with another early-flowering plum nearby. Mirabelles Golden Sphere and Countess make ideal partners, and their golden and red fruits look wonderful together. Plant in full sun, avoiding frost pockets to protect the early blossom, and water well during dry spells while the tree establishes. Prune in midsummer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker. Fully hardy (RHS H6). The fruit is delicious, but the stones and leaves shouldn't be eaten, so keep those out of reach of children and pets.
