Few sights herald spring quite like the star magnolia in bloom. In early spring, before the leaves appear, its bare branches are smothered in delicate, fragrant white flowers, each one a starburst of up to 18 slender petals. This specimen has been trained on an 80cm clear stem, which raises the flowering head to eye level and gives it an elegant, tree-like shape that suits smaller gardens, courtyards and formal schemes.
Star magnolia is naturally slow-growing and compact. It reaches 1.5–2.5m in height and 2.5–4m in spread over 10–20 years, which makes it one of the best magnolias where space is limited. It makes a striking feature in a lawn or border and grows happily in a large container on a patio or beside a doorway.
It prefers moist but well-drained, neutral to acid soil in full sun or partial shade, and it will also cope with alkaline soil as long as it doesn't dry out. It's fully hardy, but a sheltered spot away from cold winds helps protect the early flowers from late frosts. Magnolias rarely need pruning. If shaping is required, do it in midsummer when the plant is in full leaf. Magnolia stellata isn't known to be harmful to people or pets, so it's a safe choice for family gardens.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
