One of the grandest of all early magnolias, Magnolia campbellii 'Charles Raffill' opens its huge flowers on bare branches in March. Deep rose-pink buds unfurl into large rose-purple goblets with paler interiors, a breathtaking sight at the very start of spring. Vigorous and upright when young, it broadens with age into a magnificent specimen tree.
It reaches around 4m x 2m after 10 years. Plant in full sun or light shade in a sheltered spot, in moist, well-drained, ideally slightly acidic soil; heavier clay is tolerated. Shelter matters, as cold winds and late frosts can damage the buds and flowers. Pruning is rarely needed, but any shaping is best done straight after flowering or in late summer. Its early flowering makes a sheltered position especially important.
Each tree is hand-selected before dispatch.
