Liriodendron tulipifera – Tulip Tree – 12ltr Pot

The tulip tree is one of the grandest trees you can grow, and one of the most distinctive. Its bright, glossy green leaves have an unusual squared-off tip, as though the end has been snipped away. In autumn they turn a rich, buttery yellow. Mature trees bear large, tulip-shaped flowers in summer, pale green with a flare of orange at the base of each petal, which give the tree its name. It is a patient tree, and flowering can take many years to begin, but the handsome foliage makes it a striking specimen from the start. It forms a broadly conical crown and is best suited to a large garden, parkland or open lawn, where it has room to reach its full potential.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained, lime-free soil. Dig plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the ground before planting and stake the tree firmly. Water regularly through the growing season until it is fully established, as it does not tolerate drought. It is fully hardy and needs very little pruning; remove any broken or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. All parts may be harmful if eaten, and contact can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves when handling it and plant it away from areas where children or pets might chew on it. Expect it to reach around 20m in height with a spread of about 10m. Give it plenty of space away from buildings.
