Liriodendron tulipifera 'Fastigiatum' – Upright Tulip Tree – 12ltr Pot

The tulip tree has some of the most distinctive leaves of any hardy tree. They are broad and four-lobed, with a squared-off tip that looks almost cut with scissors. 'Fastigiatum' brings this handsome foliage to a much narrower tree than the species. Its stiffly upright branches form a broad column, which makes it a fine choice where a full-spreading tulip tree would take too much space. The fresh green leaves turn clear buttery yellow in autumn. Once the tree reaches maturity, it bears cup-shaped, tulip-like flowers in summer, pale green with a band of orange at the base of each petal. It is a striking vertical accent for a larger garden, and several planted in a row make an elegant avenue.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained, neutral to acid soil. It grows happily in clay, loam or sand. A sunny spot with some shelter from the strongest winds gives the best leaves and autumn colour. Dig plenty of well-rotted compost or manure into the planting hole, stake firmly, and water well through the first few summers. It is fully hardy (RHS H6) and needs very little pruning; remove any broken or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. Expect a height of 12m or more with a spread of 4–8m, though this is a patient tree that takes over 50 years to reach its full size.
