Leucothoe [Scarletta] ('Zeblid')
An evergreen, spreading shrub with gracefully arching branches, grown for the vivid seasonal colour of its slender, glossy foliage. New leaves emerge a rich dark red, maturing to glossy dark green edged in bright red through summer, before turning bronze to burgundy-red again over winter — giving genuine year-round interest from foliage alone. Fragrant white bell-shaped flowers appear in racemes from late spring into early summer as a bonus.
According to RHS data, this reaches around 1 to 1.2 metres in height with a similar spreading habit, forming a dense, weed-suppressing mound that makes an excellent low-maintenance groundcover or specimen for a shaded border. Grow in moist, acidic soil in full sun or partial shade — it's tolerant of some exposure, and fully hardy. Prune only lightly if needed, ideally in late winter once the worst of the cold has passed; as with other Leucothoe, all parts are toxic if ingested.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
