Leucothoe Carinella 2L

A lovely, compact evergreen shrub, Leucothoe 'Carinella' brings gentle year-round colour to shadier corners of the garden with its glossy, ovate leaves that open a striking ruby-red in spring before deepening to rich, dark red-purple through autumn and winter. This gradual shift in foliage colour gives the plant genuine seasonal interest even without a flower in sight, making it a valuable addition to the winter garden.

In spring, dainty sprays of small, creamy white, bell-shaped flowers appear amongst the foliage, adding a delicate touch of fragrance and contrast against the coloured leaves. Naturally compact and spreading in habit, 'Carinella' is well suited to shaded beds and borders, woodland-style planting, or a large container, where its low, overhanging growth can spill attractively over the edges.

This shrub thrives in a shaded to partially shaded position, sheltered from strong winds, and prefers moist, humus-rich, acidic soil that doesn't dry out. Where garden soil isn't naturally acidic, it also does very well in a container using an ericaceous compost mix.
