Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red' 17cm

A truly distinctive evergreen shrub, Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red' is prized for its glossy, playfully twisted foliage, which sets it apart from almost anything else in the garden. The uniquely crimped, curling leaves put on a real seasonal show, emerging a vivid orange-red in spring, maturing to a rich glossy green through summer, then turning scarlet as autumn arrives before deepening to a striking reddish-purple through the winter months.

In spring, short clusters of small, slightly fragrant, white bell-shaped flowers appear, followed by red berries that bring further seasonal interest and are attractive to garden birds. Naturally compact and dense in habit, 'Curly Red' works beautifully as a specimen in a shady border, tucked into a woodland-style planting scheme, or grown in a large container on a shaded patio or terrace, where its unusual texture can be properly appreciated.

Best suited to a partially or fully shaded position, this Leucothoe thrives in moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Where garden soil isn't naturally acidic, it also grows very well in a container using an ericaceous compost mix, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of gardens.
