Leucophyta brownii 10.5cm

An unmistakable talking point for any border or container, Leucophyta brownii forms a dense, rounded mound of wiry, tangled stems covered in fine white-grey down, giving the whole plant an almost metallic, silver-felted look. Tiny yellow-white button flowers appear in summer, but it's really grown for that striking, sculptural foliage, which holds its colour all year and pairs beautifully with vivid flower colours or other silver and grey-leaved plants.

Native to the coastlines of southern Australia, this compact evergreen shrub typically reaches 30-60cm in height and spread, forming a naturally neat dome without much need for pruning. It thrives in full sun and free-draining, even poor soil, and its origins make it superbly tolerant of wind, salt spray and drought once established — an excellent choice for an exposed coastal spot.
