Koelreuteria paniculata – Pride of India / Golden Rain Tree – 12 Litre Pot

The Golden Rain Tree offers something different in every season, making it one of the most rewarding specimen trees for a sunny garden. In spring its elegant, finely divided leaves unfurl with a soft pinkish flush before maturing to fresh green. In mid to late summer, when few trees are in flower, it is covered in large, airy sprays of small golden-yellow blossoms, much loved by bees and other pollinators. These are followed by eye-catching, papery, lantern-like seed pods that ripen to shades of bronze and pink, while the foliage turns warm yellow before falling in autumn.

Despite its common name, this beautiful tree hails from China and Korea. It is hardy through most of the UK (RHS H5) and thrives in chalk, clay, loam or sand of any pH, provided the soil is well drained or moist but well-drained. Plant it in full sun to enjoy the best flowering, in either an exposed or sheltered spot. Once established it is notably drought tolerant, and it is generally trouble-free and low maintenance, with a naturally graceful, spreading shape.

Plant between autumn and early spring, stake firmly and water regularly through the first growing season while it establishes. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any damaged or crossing branches in late winter. In time it will reach 8–12m in height with a spread of more than 8m.
