A compact, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with tufted, upright, grassy foliage and dense flower spikes that shift through a striking range of colour as they age — opening cool lime-green, maturing through canary yellow to a soft buttery cream, often with several shades visible on a single spike at once. Bred for a dwarf habit compared to traditional Red Hot Pokers, 'Poco Citron' blooms in succession from midsummer into autumn, giving a long season of interest, and its flowers are popular with bees and other pollinators.
Reaching around 35–50cm in height with a similar spread, it needs full sun and fertile, moist but well-drained soil that isn't waterlogged over winter — good drainage is the key to success with this plant. Its compact size makes it well suited to containers or the front of a border, and it's a good choice for coastal gardens too. Cut down old flower stems once flowering has finished, and tidy up any dead or tatty leaves in mid-spring rather than autumn, as leaving foliage in place over winter helps protect the crown from frost. Divide congested clumps in late spring to keep plants vigorous and to produce more for free.
Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch to ensure it reaches you in the best possible condition.
