Iris ensata 1Ltr

A clump-forming perennial to around 80cm in height, with erect, sword-like foliage and striking violet-purple flowers up to 12cm across, blooming in mid to late summer. The broad, rounded falls are marked with a fine white or yellow midrib, giving each flower real presence at the water's edge.

Japanese Iris thrives in moist to wet, humus-rich, acidic soil and is ideal for pond margins and bog gardens, though it will also grow well in a border with reliably damp soil. It prefers full sun to partial shade, and unlike some other water irises, dislikes waterlogging over winter, so good drainage in the colder months is worth bearing in mind.
