Ilex × altaclerensis 'Golden King' – Holly 'Golden King' – 12 Litre Pot

Despite its name, 'Golden King' is actually a female holly, and one of the finest golden-variegated forms you can grow. Its broad, glossy leaves are only slightly spiny and boldly margined with bright yellow, with the occasional all-gold leaf adding extra sparkle. Small white flowers in spring are followed by reddish-brown berries that ripen through autumn and winter, set off beautifully against the golden foliage.

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it forms a compact, bushy shape, making it an excellent specimen for a border or lawn, a bright evergreen hedge, or a colourful focal point that lifts the garden through the darkest months. Fully hardy (RHS H6), it grows in chalk, clay, loam or sand of any pH, in moist but well-drained or free-draining soil, and copes with both exposed and sheltered positions. Plant in full sun for the brightest variegation. Its gentler leaves make it easier to handle than many hollies, though the berries are ornamental only and should not be eaten by people or pets. A male holly nearby will help ensure a good crop of berries.

Plant from autumn to spring and water well through the first year. Little pruning is needed beyond removing any misplaced or all-green shoots, while hedges can be trimmed in early spring. In time it will reach 4–8m in height with a spread of 2.5–4m if left unclipped.
